These fees are for students commencing study on one of these courses in 2022/23.

**Applicants from Independent businesses, who are not employed by NHS Scotland, are considered for entry.  Please note that Independent premises are required to have in place a satisfactory practice learning audit that is completed by the module team in order to meet this essential element of the application criteria.  There will be an additional charge for this audit, over and above the cost of the module, please contact the Programme Lead, Ali Wood for more information about this additional charge. PhDs and Professional Doctorates

* With the exception of research students who have a studentship, all research students requiring laboratory, practical or clinical expenses will pay a minimum bench fee of £1,000, which covers the cost of consumable materials and other expenses associated with the student's research at QMU. Students undertaking a proposal involving expenses which exceed £1,000 will be required to cover these costs if they do not have sponsorship.

** All research students exceeding their normal prescribed period of study without submitting their thesis are registered as continuing students, and pay the appropriate annual continuation fee.

#Students who complete their studies within the 2020/21 academic year and have not paid either the full or part time fee during this year, will also be charged the exam fee.

##Full time international students who commenced on their studies in 2020/21 will be charged £14,884.

SAAS POSTGRADUATE TUITION FEE LOANS

In 2022/23 the Student Awards Agency for Scotland are offering tuition fee loans of up to £10,000 for Scottish students.

For further information and in order to check your eligibility for the tuition fee loan you should check the information on the postgraduate section of the SAAS website.

Applications can also be made via the SAAS website.

Please note that if you are a part time student, you must take no longer than twice the length of the full time programme to complete your studies.

STUDENT FINANCE LOANS - ENGLAND, WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND

Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland can apply for a loan to cover all or part of their fees as well as a living cost loan. More information on fees and funding.

The fee levels and other charges detailed here apply to all students who commence or resume their studies in Session 2022/23

Fee levels quoted are correct at the time of publication. The University reserves the right to amend published fees.

Fee levels are reviewed on an annual basis, and are subject to increase.

Research students in receipt of a studentship do not pay tuition fees or bench fees, but are liable for the examination fee and any continuation fee.

PAYMENT OF FEES (DUE DATE)

Tuition fees and Bench fees (Research students only) become due on the first day of your programme of study. Arrangements for fee payments are detailed below.

International students who have paid a £2000 deposit will have this amount deducted from their overall fees.

21 DAY PERIOD

Within 21 days of the payment due date, all students must either pay their tuition fees in full, or have arranged with the Finance Office to pay by instalments. If you choose to pay in full within the 21-day period, you may use pay via the Student Portal, debit card or credit card, in person at the Finance Desk or by sending in a cheque, made payable to QMU. Please put your matriculation number on the back of the cheque and send it to the Finance Office, QMU, Queen Margaret University Drive, Musselburgh, East Lothian, EH21 6UU. You can also pay over the phone by calling +44 (0)131 474 0000 and asking for 'Finance.'

PAYMENT BY INSTALMENTS

You may choose to pay tuition fees by instalments, rather than by a single payment either by Direct Debit or Recurring Card Payment (RCP). These instalments are over 8 months, October to May for September starts or January to August (for January 2023 starts only).

If you choose to pay by Direct Debit you will find the form on the Student Portal (you must have a UK Bank Account for this to operate). Alternatively, you can set-up an RCP on the Student Portal whereby instalments are taken from your debit/credit card over 8 months (October to May or January to August for January 2023 starts only). For all returning students, you must renew your Direct Debit or RCP each year. For new students you will only get access to the Student Portal after you have completed online matriculation. Please note that short courses/low fee courses may not be paid by instalments.

PAYMENT BY A SPONSOR

It is a condition of registration that students accept liability for their tuition fees. Remember that even if your fees are to be paid by a sponsor, such as an embassy or employer, it is your personal responsibility to ensure that they are paid and to provide evidence of funding when you matriculate. Where you have failed to provide written confirmation of funding within 28 days of the start of their programme of study, you will be deemed to be personally liable for payment of the fees, and an invoice will be issued to the student accordingly. If your sponsor is a Health Board you must obtain a Purchase Order number from them so this can be quoted on an invoice.

APPLYING FOR SAAS FUNDING

If you are planning to apply for funding from SAAS (Scottish Awards Agency Scotland) then please do so by 30th June. This will guarantee your funding is in place by the first day of term. 

DISCOUNT

For all annual tuition fees of £9,000 and above, where the student is self-funding and the fee is settled in full by 31 October 2022, a discount of 5% will be authorised.

Queen Margaret University is offering a 10% discount in postgraduate tuition fees for alumni who have graduated with an undergraduate degree from the University’s Edinburgh campus. This discount is available for students who register for a full or part-time postgraduate degree.

This discount applies to home and international students, and applies to the self-funded element of the postgraduate tuition fee only. Self-funded fees include those supported by a tuition fee loan. This discount does not apply to any part of the tuition fee which is covered by a scholarship, funding body, your employer, a company, or any other source of funding.

PROFESSIONAL BODY REGISTRATION FEES

Students will be personally liable for payment of any professional body registration fees as detailed in the Registration & Membership fees section above.

LATE PAYMENTS

Unless you have chosen to pay by instalments, if your tuition fee remains unpaid 21 days after it is due, you may become liable to pay interest at 2.5% above the UK clearing bank base rate per annum on the full amount. Interest will run from the due date until the outstanding fees are eventually paid.

If you have chosen to pay by instalments, interest on a late instalment will run from the due date to the date when the instalment is paid.

DIFFICULTIES IN MAKING A PAYMENT

If you are experiencing difficulty in paying all or part of your tuition fees, you must contact the Credit Controller as soon as possible (see contact details below). The Credit Controller will help you to draw up a payment schedule, to which you will be required to adhere until your fees are paid in full.

REQUIREMENT TO LEAVE THE UNIVERSITY

Unless you have agreed a payment schedule with the Credit Controller, if tuition fees are still outstanding 8 weeks after the end of the 21-day period or if an instalment is over 4 weeks late, you may be asked to leave the University. The University will put your debt into the hands of a debt collector.

REINSTATEMENT ON PAYMENT OF FULL TUITION FEES

On payment in full of outstanding tuition fees before the end of the academic year in question, the University may permit your reinstatement on your programme of study. However, if you are behind with your studies you may have to repeat parts of the programme, thereby incurring further fees.

PROGRESSION

You will not be permitted to progress to the next year of your course if you have any debts due to the University from previous years.

DEGREE CEREMONY

The University may refuse to allow you to attend a degree ceremony if tuition fees are outstanding.

APPEAL PROCESS

If you are unhappy about a decision concerning payment of your fees, including a requirement that you withdraw from the University, you may contact the Student Funding Adviser, and bring a complaint under the University's complaint procedure.

EARLY WITHDRAWAL

If you leave your programme of study early, you must ensure that you submit a withdrawal form via this link https://www.qmu.ac.uk/current-students/thinking-of-leaving/if-you-want-to-leave-qmu/. The date of withdrawal will be deemed to be the date that the Registry department receives written confirmation of withdrawal. You will be liable for all or part of the fee for the full academic year as follows:

If you leave within 28 days of the start of your programme of study, you will be liable for an administration fee of £250.

If you leave more than 28 days after the start of your programme of study, you will be liable for the appropriate proportion of the fee based on the semesters attended wholly or in part.

If you are making payment of fees by instalments and withdraw from your programme of study, you must still meet any shortfall between the full fee determined by the University and the total amount of the instalments already paid.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING FINANCIAL HARDSHIP

If you are experiencing financial difficulties in paying tuition fees you should seek help at the earliest possible opportunity. The University will be sympathetic and assist where it can. However, in order to maintain the quality of teaching for everyone else, the University must act to recover debts. Initially you should approach Bill Stronach, the Student Funding Adviser within Student Services for a confidential discussion. The Scottish Government confirmed on 9 July 2020 that, as a result of Brexit, higher education students from the EU starting their studies from academic year 2021-22 will no longer have the costs of their tuition fees met by the Scottish Government. ‘Home fee’ status for these students will come to end, and they will be classified as international students for the purposes of tuition fees. The Scottish Government has confirmed that postgraduate students from the Republic of Ireland who commence their studies from 2021/22 will have the same fee status as home/rest of UK students. Eligible students from the Republic of Ireland will also be able to access a tuition fee loan from Student Awards Agency Scotland. Learn more about Brexit and funding on the SAAS website.
