Professor Tom Mercer (MSc, PhD) is a Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation in the Dietetics, Nutrition & Biological Sciences, Physiotherapy, Podiatry & Radiography Division.

Tom is the Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation and Director of the Centre for Health, Activity and Rehabilitation Research at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh. He completed his undergraduate training in Physical Education and Biology (University of Lancaster) and postgraduate training in Exercise Physiology (MSc Lakehead, Canada; PhD Staffordshire). Tom has held academic positions in Exercise Physiology, Exercise and Health and Clinical Exercise Rehabilitation at Staffordshire University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Bangor University. Whilst at Staffordshire University he also served as the director of the Centre for Health and Exercise, a healthy lifestyle and occupational health promotion unit,
He is a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES); Co-chair of the United Kingdom Kidney Research Consortium, Exercise Clinical Study Group; Associate Editor BMC Nephrology; member of British Renal Society “Exercise Rehabilitation” short-life (3 years) steering group; a charter member of the European Dialysis and Transplantation-affiliated European Working Group on Exercise Physiology and Renal Rehabilitation; former elected Vice-chair of the European Association of Rehabilitation in Chronic Kidney Disease 2010-2013.
He is also a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Clinical Trial Network and is a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Fatigue working group.
He has published in excess of 100 scientific papers and book chapters and has co-written and edited 4 books. He has extensive experience as a PhD supervisor and as an external examiner for PhD degrees both in the UK and internationally.
Professor Mercer’s physical activity and exercise rehabilitation research has been funded by diverse sources including: NIHR HTA programme (PEDAL trial of renal rehabilitation); British Kidney Patients Association; Multiple Sclerosis Society of UK; Scottish Government; NHS Health Scotland; NHS West Midlands R & D (LORS scheme); NHS Lothian. Additional Industry-funded research has been supported by Janssen Cilag (Ortho Biotech), Amgen, and Boehringer-Mannheim.
