Emma’s research interests currently focus on ways in which dialogue can be used to enable marginalized groups to understand their lived experience as expertise and organize to communicate their views. She has worked very closely with young students to co create ways of managing Fresher’s Week drinking and socialization, and with teenagers in six Edinburgh high schools over the last four years to co create The AlcoLOLs project. It uses dialogue to enable young people to express and listen to authentic views about drinking alcohol and design ways to effect change at different levels within their communities (involving around 3,000 pupils in dialogue to date). She has also used dialogic techniques in a range of situations, from enabling people with lived experience of bereavement to communicate their views to policy makers involved in palliative care, to facilitating parents to identify and articulate views on appropriate high school values.
She also focusses on ways in which organisations can build social capital and legitimacy through corporate communication, corporate image and identity.
