Vlad Butucea is a writer, researcher and assistant lecturer in Drama and Performance. He holds an Mlitt in Playwriting and Dramaturgy, and has completed an AHRC-funded PhD in Digital Theatre and Performance at the University of Glasgow.
As a writer for stages and screens, Vlad made his debut writing one part of National Theatre Scotland’s sci-fi trilogy Interference (2019). Recently, he co-wrote the film/ stage hybrid The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (National Theatre of Scotland, Selkie Production, Sky Arts), and was a contributing writer on Ghost Light (Edinburgh International Festival, National Theatre of Scotland). His most recent play Silkworm, a Pearlfisher & The Byre Theatre co-production in association with Assembly Festival, won a 2022 Fringe First Award.
Vlad’s research explores digital theatre and performance through queer theory, new materialism and phenomenology. He has presented and published papers in both national and international settings.

Vlad’s research focuses on digital theatre and performance. He is particularly interested in bodily interactions between spectators and technologies, as well as on human-technological collaboration in performance practices. His research explores a variety of technologically-led performance, including VR, AI, video games, audio performance.
