Karen has extensive experience as a nurse practitioner in the field of public health. This experience spans women’s health, sexual health, HIV, hepatitis C and other blood borne viruses to working more generally in the field of liver disease. Much of this work has involved working with social care and addiction partners to deliver care in non-traditional health care settings to people at risk due to addiction, who often do not engage in mainstream health services.

Working with people at different stages in recovery from alcohol to explore how health interventions can be delivered in a way which optimises their engagement.
Service development to improve engagement for those who experience barriers in accessing mainstream services, either through substance use, immigration status or geographical area.
Active research interests:
- Exploring the use of a FibroScan® as a motivational tool, in the recovery of people drinking to harmful levels from an area of high deprivation in a rural, island community.

Karen's seminars and lectures focus on public health, sexual health, blood borne viruses, caring in a professional context, person centred practice, amongst many other topics.
