Lesley McKinlay

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in Lothian in 1993. My background has been mainly in surgical nursing and the speciality of urology. Most recently, I worked in the Nurse Urology Unit as Deputy Charge Nurse at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. I have experience working in various different ward areas, specialist urology clinics and a one year secondment in prostate cancer research. My clinical role over the past few years was combined with an educational role within the NHS Lothian education team which included teaching post-registration clinical skills. I completed my post-graduate certificate in professional and higher education and subsequently joined Queen Margaret University part-time in June 2012. My initial role was as an assistant lecturer and this has now become a full time lecturer position.

I continue to work one day per month in the urology unit where I contribute to clinical practice and continue to build links between QMU and NHS Lothian. I am also involved in work with the Prostate Scotland charity and assist in the development and review of information leaflets for patients.

My teaching experience has predominantly been on the skills and practice modules for the undergraduate nursing students and I contribute to other modules within the BSc (Hons) programme. I have also joined a module team at degree and masters level in ‘Making judgements and decisions in practice’.

I have recently taken on the role of Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Nursing programme and look forward to this new challenge at a very exciting time for nursing at QMU and beyond.
