My career pathway in Nurse Education started in 1990. It has taken me from the role of Clinical Supervisor to Clinical Lecturer and on to my current post as Lecturer in Nursing. My clinical experience includes General, Neurological and Cardiothoracic surgical nursing and latterly adult Critical Care. I teach predominantly on the pre-registration BSc(Hons) Nursing but am also the Academic Link Person (ALP) for an international collaboration with the British University in Egypt (BUE), Cairo. As part of the School of Health Sciences Manual Handling team, my clinical skills teaching extends across Nursing and the Allied Health Professions. Teaching, curriculum development and research in the area of Clinical Skills Learning has been a major focus of my work over the years, enabling me to maintain close links with nurses in practice. The introduction and implementation of Problem Based Learning into the curriculum has been another significant area of involvement, which fits very well with our nursing division’s philosophy of person centredness. More recently I have developed an interest and am leading in the promotion of Contemplative approaches to student education and staff working practices within the nursing division. Contemplative practices such as Mindfulness also link closely to my long standing interest in the clinical management of pain.

Clinical Skills Education has been my research focus. I was part of the research team for an NBS exploratory study examining the impact of laboratory based learning on the acquisition of nursing & midwifery competencies. I was also a principle investigator of a small study investigating how first year students evaluate their own learning in clinical nursing skills. During Master’s studies I developed a proposal for introducing a pain assessment learning algorithm for student nurses. I am a member of the Scottish Mindfulness Research Community and part of a QMU group exploring potential grants in the field of Contemplative education.
