Dr Clare Uytman (MA, MSc, PhD, CPsychol) is Joint Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Psychology degree and a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Psychology, Sociology and Education. She is also an Associate member of the Centre for Applied Social Science.

I have been at QMU since 2006 and am currently a Senior Lecturer in Psychology with particular expertise in Social and Qualitative Psychology.
Previously I was employed in the role of Psychology Technician. While in this position I obtained my PhD with a thesis is entitled “Living with Limb Loss: Individuals’ and Prosthetists’ Perceptions of Amputation, Prosthesis Use and Rehabilitation”. This is available to view via QMU eTheses.
Previously I obtained an MSc Health Psychology from QMU in 2004 and an MA (hons) Psychology from University of Glasgow in 2003.

My primary research focus is on individuals’ experience of limb loss and prosthesis use. My interests lie in the understanding of this experience held by individuals, as well as the impact that it may have on a variety of psycho-social outcomes such as personal and social identity, coping and adjustment. On a wider level I am also interested in the psychology of disability and embodiment of assistive devices. My current research also focuses on patient-practitioner communication within a clinical setting. Finally I have further interest in body image and visible difference in both clinical and non-clinical populations.

My primary teaching responsibilities are in the areas of Social and Qualitative Psychology. I teach Social Psychology at first and second year undergraduate level with Qualitative Psychology in third year.
I also contribute to other modules throughout the undergraduate programme drawing on my specialist knowledge of Health Psychology, Phenomenology and Psychology of Disability.
I supervise undergraduate research projects particularly those investigating lived experience of health and illness and using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).
