Film and Screen Education - PgCert

We offer three individual short courses in the area of film and screen. If you have successfully completed all three short courses, you will be eligible to graduate with a PgCert in Film and Screen Education.

These courses are primarily for primary, secondary, and special school teachers in Scotland, though anyone who works regularly in educational settings is welcome to apply. Places on these short courses are funded by Screen Scotland, and the courses align to their development of a Film and Screen Curriculum in early years settings, primary and secondary schools across Scotland. Those completing all three short courses will have GTCS accreditation in Film Education and Filmmaking in Education.

Please note that you cannot apply for the PgCert at the initial stage of application. Instead, you apply each short course individually and they must be taken in sequential order.

Film and Screen Education (PgCert): More information and what you will achieve

Film, and the moving image more broadly, are central to the lives of young people, and this course develops the knowledge and practical skills of participants to enable them to embed film in their practice and reflect on the ways film can be embedded within Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence.

The PgCert in Film and Screen Education consists of three short courses:

• Film and Screen Education in Practice

How will I be taught?

Structure and exit awards

You must complete all three short courses to obtain a PgCert (60 credits). These should be completed in sequential order.

We anticipate that a maximum of 15 students will be studying each short course.

Short courses

1. Introduction to Film Education: If you want to use film in the classroom, but are unsure where to begin, this module will help you get to grip with the basics.

This course starts in February 2024.

2. Filmmaking in the Classroom: This course will equip you with fundamental practical skills in filmmaking to enable you to successfully put these into practice in educational settings. It builds upon the ‘Introduction to Film Education’ course to offer hands-on training, using relevant filmmaking equipment and software. Taught by experts at Screen Education Edinburgh (SEE), the course provides you with a solid foundation from which to build on in your teaching practice. You will also reflect on this learning and share practice with fellow learners as part of your professional development.

This course started in October 2023.

3. Film and Screen Education in Practice: This course builds upon the technical skills you developed in Filmmaking in the Classroom. This course will support you to design, deliver, and evaluate a filmmaking project in your educational setting with young learners. You will lead in the learning on a short filmmaking project, rolling out technical and creative skills to your learners. This course will develop you in creative, educational, and evaluative skills enabling you to manage the project, assess the needs of your learners, work with them to create a short film, monitor the project, track early impacts, and reflect on professional standards and practice.

This course starts in February 2024 and we anticipate that we will repeat it in February 2025.

NB The modules listed are correct at time of posting (August 2023) but are subject to change. In the event that modules change, QMU will seek to use reasonable endeavours to ensure that there is no detrimental impact on students.

Career opportunities

The PgCert in Film and Screen Education will support educators in Scotland in providing a quality film education experience for young learners. Completion of the first module aligns with General Teaching Council for Scotland Professional Recognition in Film Education, and completion of modules 2 and 3 aligns with GTCS Professional Recognition in Filmmaking Education. Therefore the PgCert offers significant professional developmental opportunities for teachers, as well as allowing educators more broadly speaking to develop skills which will be increasingly important in using film and the moving image in educational settings in Scotland.

Please see the individual course entries for this information. Please note that the Introduction is open to all, but those wishing to complete the Filmmaking in the Classroom and Professional Practice in Screen Education must meet the entry criteria.

It is not possible to apply for the full PgCert when applying. You must apply for each short course individually. On successful completion of all short courses, you are then eligible to receive the PgCert.
